History repeats itself …
… first as tragedy, then as farce.
The one thing that we learn from history and experience is than people learn neither from history nor from experience. Events in Gaza today have shown that no matter nearly 6000 years of stiff-necked history, the tribes of Shem still cannot sort out their differences without trying to knock seven shades of something stupid out of each other. This has been tried time and again, each time with the same obvious, predictable result: continued hatred, distrust, fear and suspicion. Obviously a different approach must be taken - discussion, dialogue, detente, rapprochement - need I go on?
A similar problem often occurs with people with Personality Disorders and other mental health problems: the same approach is repeatedly used, with the same obvious and predictable results: failure, worsening of the condition, further inability to cope, arrest or “sectioning”, institutionalisation, medication to cosh the symptoms rather than therapy to address the causes; release and repeat.
The only way forward is on a simple step-by-step basis - one of the few useful things I had affirmed by the A.A. - accepting certain limitations and recognising one’s own failings without criticising them in others, but being always mindful of one’s true potential, not to the detriment of others and building on cumulative progress. A little more of this could go a long way.
Shalom. Salaam.
Amen.
Whilst checking the roots of these and other words of peace, wholeness, safety and integrity, I came across the site http://www.salaamshalom.org.uk/ - an online radio station with Muslims and Jews talking together. If they can do it, so can anyone else.
