Flat Pack Furniture and BPD
Today, Sarah and I attempted to assemble a wardrobe. Not any wardrobe, but a “four door large fitment,” replete with mirror and backlight!
Our Odyssey, as modern-day Argonauts, started badly at the weekend when we found that was not enough floor space in the bedroom to lay the wardrobe flat during its assembly, so many chattels bagged up or on its side for the past few days. The assembly took almost all day, with us dividing the tasks: helping each other when two people were required, specialising in the various solo activities.
Despite all the frustrations due to limitations of space and a niggling suspicion that the other was not “doing it right,” we somehow managed between us to put together the wardrobe to our joint satisfaction and the cats’ disdain, made worse by the fact that they can no longer sneak in and wreak havoc in the sartorial department.
As well as the usual paranoia, trying to interact progressively to a greater end with only unfamiliar materials and incomprehensible instructions, collecting a few bruises and scrapes along the way seemed very similar to trying the journey through the mental health maze when first diagnosed with BPD. I hope that it also resulting in a secure, protective environment safe from demons.
Even if it does take rather longer than planned or expected!
